Gonorrhea in West Seattle Bridge

Gonorrhea Testing

Gonorrhea, also called “The Clap,” is a very common infection that carries very few symptoms. Most men or women do not notice any complications, and women who do experience symptoms may mistake gonorrhea for bladder or urinary tract infections.

The CDC estimates that, “Annually, 820,000 people in the United States get new gonorrhea infections, and less than half of these infections are detected and reported to CDC.” Gonorrhea is most common in sexually active teenagers, young adults and African Americans. This Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) can spread via vaginal, anal or oral sex.

Gonorrhea is a treatable, curable bacterial infection. But the damage done before seeking diagnosis and treatment is not as easily undone medically. So the sooner you act to know what you’re facing, the better. Neglecting to detect, report and treat gonorrhea can lead to health concerns such as:

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women
  • Epididymitis in men
  • Spread to blood/joints, which can be life-threatening
  • Transmitted to a baby during childbirth
  • Increased susceptibility for HIV
