Drug Use Among Students
Healthy students and athletes are drug free. Although the trends related to drug and alcohol use among teens and students have generally decreased over the past 40 years, the challenge still exists. And there are relative increases over shorter periods of time that need to be addressed. Drug testing programs are one piece of an integrated program to keep students and athletes drug free and healthy.
According to a 2012 survey by Monitoring the Future:
8th graders who used marijuana or another illicit drug in the past 12 months
8th graders who used an illicit drug at least once in their lifetime
10th graders who used marijuana or another illicit drug in the past 12 months
10th graders who used an illicit drug at least once in their lifetime
12th graders who used marijuana or another illicit drug in the past 12 months
12th graders who used an illicit drug at least once in their lifetime
What Does This Mean?
Like it or not, our kids are exposed to temptation to experiment with illicit drugs. A 2012 survey of 8th, 10th and 12th graders suggests that on average, more than 10% of 8th graders and nearly half of high school seniors have experimented with illegal drugs.
In addition, student athletes at all levels face intense pressure to perform better and faster all the time. As a result, they may seek to improve their abilities, scores and times through the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs, such as steroids or other substances and chemicals.
The bottom line: Schools must be prepared to deal with athletes and other students who use and abuse illegal drugs; and they need a partner like ARCpoint Labs of West Seattle Bridge, that is prepared to assist them with advice and strategies for implementing protocols designed to identify and protect students from harm due to drug use.
